I Am on OPT and I Applied to 100K Jobs and Got Zero Interviews — You Will Never Get an Interview and Here Is Why
If you have posted something like this or felt this way you are not alone — but the hard truth is that applying to more jobs is not the solution and no matter how many more you send out the result will be the same. Here is why. If you have less than 3 years of experience and no one in the US has hired you yet, why would a company stick their neck out for you? If you have 2 years of experience why would they spend time and money training you when someone with 5 years is applying for the same role? And if you are on OPT or STEM OPT why would they pay immigration attorney fees and USCIS filing costs on top of your salary when they can hire someone with zero visa complications for the same money? You are not getting ignored because you are not good enough — you are getting ignored because on paper you are the riskiest and most expensive option on the list and mass applying does not change that. What changes it is getting someone in this country to hire you first. Find a startup, find a small company, find anyone willing to give you a shot and spend your first year on OPT getting real US work experience on your resume. The pay might not be great and the role might not be everything you imagined but after that first year everything changes — now someone has hired you, someone has trusted you, someone has validated your skills with a real job title and a real paycheck. When you apply to your next role you are no longer an unknown risk, you are a candidate with US experience, a reference, and proof that you can deliver. That is when companies start calling. Stop applying to 100K jobs and start focusing on getting that first yes from anyone willing to give it to you.
