Why Your LinkedIn Profile Is the First Thing a Recruiter Checks Before Calling You as an OPT STEM OPT Candidate

Before a recruiter picks up the phone to call you they have already looked you up on LinkedIn — and if what they see does not match your resume that call may never happen. Your LinkedIn profile is essentially your digital first impression and for OPT and STEM OPT candidates it carries even more weight because recruiters are already doing extra due diligence on candidates who need work authorization. If your resume says you graduated in May 2024 but your LinkedIn says 2023 that is an immediate red flag. If your resume lists a project or a skill that is nowhere on your LinkedIn a recruiter starts questioning what is real and what is padded. Every job title, every date, every skill, every company name needs to match exactly — not roughly, not close enough, exactly. Recruiters and hiring managers use LinkedIn to verify you are who you say you are, and any inconsistency no matter how small gives them a reason to move on to the next candidate. Treat your LinkedIn profile not as a social media page but as a living version of your resume that is always being checked by someone you have not met yet.
