Your STEM OPT Clock Is Still Running Even If USCIS Has Not Approved Your Extension Yet
When you file for your STEM OPT extension before your OPT expires you get a 180 day cap gap period that lets you keep working while the application is pending — but your overall STEM OPT clock does not pause while USCIS takes their time processing your case. If your extension takes five months to approve those five months still count against your 24 month extension period meaning you could get approved and find out you have significantly less time remaining than you expected. On top of that if you travel internationally during the cap gap period you are taking a real risk because re-entering on a pending application is not guaranteed. Understanding exactly what the cap gap covers, what it does not cover, and how your timeline is being affected while you wait is something every STEM OPT candidate should be tracking closely from the moment they file.
